Octopus

This is a tag-like game.

To begin, the boundaries for play are set. If in a room, the objective would be to get from one side of the room to the other. If outside, a parameter must be set. The smaller the boundaries, the harder the game.

All players begin on one side of the playing area. An octopus is selected to stand in the middle of the playing area. They can run anywhere within the playing area. When the octopus shouts “Octopus Attack!” all players must run from one side of the playing area to the other and try to avoid being tagged by the octopus. If tagged, the player must sit down where they were tagged, and become seaweed. Seaweed may tag other players, but they must do so from their place on the ground. They may stretch and reach, but they must start from a seated position. If tagged by seaweed, the tagged player also becomes seaweed in the place they were tagged.

Once the number of players dwindles to a few, the octopus may shout out “Tidal wave!” in which case all seaweed can stand up and chase players to tag them. However, they must sit where they are when the players reach the other side.

The game ends when one or two players remain, or when you are out of time.

Dragon Tail

Dragon Tail is a game that works best outside in a large open playing area with soft grass, as falling over is quite frequent.

How the game works is one person is chosen to be “it” like in tag. They stand at the front of the line, and everyone lines up behind them with their hands on the shoulders or waist of the person in front of them. They cannot let go of this person. If during the game the chain is broken, someone calls out “Broken Chain!” and everyone must freeze and get back in line to start again.

The object of the game is for the person who is “it” at the front of the line to tag the person at the end of the line, similar to chasing one’s own tail.

The game continues until out of time, tiredness, or the person at the end is successfully tagged.

Rhythm Master

This game is a variation of Wink Murder.

The players sit in a circle, and a detective is selected. The detective leaves the room or playing area so they cannot see the next proceedings. Then a rhythm master is selected and the leader of the activity calls out, “when the Rhythm Master is ready, they can start the rhythm.” The Rhythm Master then starts a rhythm that everyone else mimics. For example, the rhythm master might start clapping their hands to a rhythm, and everyone must do the same. The detective is then called back to the circle and must figure out who is the Rhythm Master.  The Rhythm Master can change the rhythm at any time and everyone else, once they notice the rhythm change, must also change their rhythm. The detective has three guesses.

When the game ends (with either the detective guessing correctly, or running out of guesses), the Rhythm Master becomes the new detective, and a new rhythm master is selected.

Disco Frog

This game is a variation of Wink Murder.

The players sit in a circle and one player is selected to be the detective. They leave the room or playing area so they can not see or hear the next proceedings. Then a “disco frog” (the equivalent of the murderer in Wink Murder) is chosen and the detective is called back to the circle. The “disco frog” then sticks out their tongue at other players when the detective isn’t looking. If a player sees the “disco frog” stick their tongue out at them, then that player has to stand up and do the disco, then pass out from sheer exhaustion of doing the disco (the equivalent of a murder in Wink Murder). The detective’s job is to figure out who the “disco frog” is before all the players pass out. The detective has three guesses.

When the game ends (either with the detective guessing correctly, or running out of guesses), then the disco frog becomes the detective and a new disco frog is selected.

Do-si-do!

Girls form teams of two, and stand behind one another, with the first person on each team forming a circle with the other first players. Balls or other objects are placed in the middle of the circle, with one less object then there are teams each round. The leader calls out either “Up,” “Down,” “Under,” or “Do-si-do!” When the leader calls “Up!” the partner in behind must do a mock piggy back with the partner in front with at least one leg up (however one leg can stay on the ground). If the leader says “Down!” then the behind partner climbs down from the mock piggy back. If the leader calls out “Under!” then the behind team member must crawl through the other partner’s legs and now stands in front. If the leader calls out “Do-si-do!” then the partner at the back runs around the outside of the circle, crawls through their partner’s legs and tries to grab a ball from the middle before the other partners do. The team without a ball is out and sits down. A ball is removed, and the next round begins. The game is over when one team remains.

Snap, Crackle, Pop

Girls form teams of three, and stand one behind the other with the first person on each team forming a circle with the other first players. Each team member takes a name; either Snap, Crackle, or Pop. In the middle of the circle, balls or other objects are placed, with one less object then there are teams each round. The leader calls out one of the three names OR “through.” When their name is called, that member must run around the outside of the teams in a clockwise fashion, crawl through their teammates’ legs, and grab a ball from the middle before the other teams do. If a team doesn’t get a ball, then that team is out, a ball is removed, and the round begins again. If the leader calls “through,” then the last member in the line must crawl through the legs of the other two teammates to the front of the line. This continues until one team is left.

Reflex

The girls form two teams and sit in a line next to each other holding hands. The two lines sit back to back, with an object like a ball or a mitten at one end of the two lines and a leader with a coin at the other. When the game begins, all the team members close their eyes except for the first person in line next to the leader.

The leader flips the coin, and if the coin is a head, then the first person squeezes the hand of the person next to them, who then squeezes the hand of the next person, passing the squeeze down to the end of the line. When the last person gets their hand squeezed, they open their eyes and rush to the object, trying to grab it before the other team does.

However, if the coin is flipped and is a tail, then the first person doesn’t squeeze. A score is kept where a team gets one point for getting the object on a correct flip, and loses a point if the squeeze is passed and the object grabbed on a wrong flip.
