Fire’s Burning

This song is typically used to open a campfire.

Fire’s burning, fire’s burning,
Draw nearer, draw nearer,
In the gloaming, in the gloaming,
Come sing and be merry.

Good song to use as a round.

Tall Trees

Tall trees that reach the sky,
Mountains and lakes nearby,
Come near my friends,
Come sing my friends,
Our campfire time is nigh.

Good song to sing in a round.

ACTIONS

Tall trees… – trace a Christmas tree shape with your fingers, starting at the bottom, and working to the top, doing one side of the tree with each hand.

Mountains – draw a triangle from the tip down with no bottom.

Lakes – mimic waves with your hands.

Come near… – with open arms, bring your hands in to cover your heart.

Come sing… – swing your arms back out to an open arm stance

Our campfire… – no action.

Land of the Silver Birch

Land of the Silver Birch,
Home of the beaver,
Where stands the mighty moose,
Wanders at will,

CHORUS
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more,
Boom didi ah da,
Boom didi ah da,
Boom didi ah da,
Boom.

My heart is sick for thee,
Here in the low lands,
I will return to you,
Hills of the north.

CHORUS

Swift as a silver fish,
Canoe of birch bark,
Thy mighty waterways,
Carry me forth.

CHORUS

Here where the blue lake lies,
I’ll set my wigwam,
Close to the water’s edge,
Silent and still.

CHORUS

First verse and Chorus good in a round with The Canoe Song sung twice.

Canoe Song (My Paddle’s Keen and Bright)

My paddle’s keen and bright,
Flashing with silver,
Follow the wild goose flight,
Dip, dip and swing.

Dip, dip and swing her back,
Flashing with silver,
Follow the wild goose flight,
Dip, dip and swing…
Dip. Dip and swing…

Good in a round with itself or with Land of the Silver Birch.

One Bottle of Pop

One bottle of pop,
Two bottle of pop,
Three bottle of pop,
Four bottle of pop,
Five bottle of pop,
Six bottle of pop,
Seven bottle of pop,
More.

Fish and chips and vinegar,
vinegar,
vinegar,
Fish and chips and vinegar,
Pepper, Pepper, Pepper,
Salt.

Don’t throw your junk in my backyard,
my backyard,
my backyard,
Don’t throw your junk in my backyard,
my backyard’s full.

Each verse can be offset to create a round.

Thunderation

Thunder, Thunder,
Thunderation.
We’re the Girl Guide,
Association.
When we work with,
Determination.
We create a,
SENSATION!

Progressively get louder each time you sing it. Then get suddenly quiet for the second last time. Shout the song the last time.

The Guide Marching Song

This song is sometimes used when Guides do their horseshoe. In that case, only the first two verses and the Chorus is sung, although it can be extended if more time is needed.

Who are we,
Swingin’ along the road,
With a pack on our back,
A song in our heart,
To ease the load?

It’s been one hundred years or more,
Since they crowded through the door,
And they’re coming along,
As gay and strong,
As ever they came before.

CHORUS
We are Guides.
All Guides,
And in unexpected places,
You’ll meet our friendly faces,
And a ready hand beside.

And there’s not much danger,
Of finding you’re a stranger,
For Commissioner or Ranger,
We are Guides.
All Guides.

Who are we,
Living beneath the skies,
While the shimmering sun,
The pattering rain,
The clouds pass by?

We will dine beneath the bows,
And our leader always vows,
That we’re never afraid of wasps,
And hardly ever afraid of cows.

CHORUS
Who are we,
sitting around the fire,
We’ll be happy to have your company,
if that’s your desire. And the evening will be gay,
at the sunset hour of day,
with a song to sing,
and a tale to tell,
and many a tune to play.CHORUS

Who are we,
leaving the beaten track,
We are climbing high,
to the open sky,
and won’t turn back.

You may join them where you will,
for the gate is open still,
and the Guides of today,
can find their way,
to the path across the hill.

Last Chorus:

We are Guides,
all Guides,
at this moment you will find us,
with a hundred years behind us,
and a steady heart besides.
For in need or danger,
we are friends with ever stranger,
as a Brownie, Guide, or Ranger,
we are Guides.
All Guides.

The World Song

Our way is clear as we march on,
And see our flag on high!
It’s never furled,
Throughout the world,
For hope shall never die!

We must unite for what is right,
In friendship true and strong,
Until the earth,
In its rebirth,
Shall sing our song,
Shall sing our song.

All those who love the true and good,
Who’s promises were kept,
With humble minds,
Whose acts were kind,
Whose honour never slept!

These were the free,
And we must be,
Prepared like them to live,
To give to all,
Both great and small,
All we can give.
All we can give.

On My Honour

The first verse in this song is the Chorus, and can be sung between every verse (except before the last one, since the last one is a repeat of the Chorus). However, it can also be sung straight through, without repeating the Chorus, except at the end.

When teaching this song to younger girls, such as Guides, usually only the Chorus and maybe one verse is taught. Pathfinders and Rangers typically learn the whole thing.

On My Honour,
I will try,
There’s a duty to be done,
And I say aye,
There’s a reason here,
For a reason above,
My honour is to try,
And my duty is to love.

No one needs to know my name,
If I’ve hurt someone,
Then I’m to blame.
If I’ve helped someone,
Then I’ve helped me,
And that’s the way,
That it should be.

I’ve tucked away a song or two,
If you’re feeling low,
There’s on for you.
If you need a friend,
Then I will come.
There’s plenty more,
Where I come from.

Come with me where the fire burns bright,
We can even see better,
By its own light,
We can find more meaning,
In a campfire glow,
Than we’ve ever found in a year or so.

We’ve a promise,
To always keep,
And sing day is done,
Before we sleep,
We’re Girl Guides together,
And when we’re gone,
We’ll still be a trying,
and a singing this song.

On my honour,
I will try,
There’s a duty to be done,
And I say aye,
There’s a reason here,
For a reason above,
My honour is to try,
And my duty is to love.
